Yes no Vice City, no San Andreas - this is the granddaddy original! Back in the days when 2D games still rocked, Grand Theft Auto brought a whole new concept to the world of gaming, without the need for fancy 3D effects. The premise was pretty much the same as it's successors - you're trying to build a rep with the crime bosses, but in order to achieve that, you have to do some dirty work on the streets! Kill a target, drive a car to a certain dstination to pick up a delivery, anything you'd reckon a normal hard working thug would have to do to make a living. "But that's a commercial game", I hear from the back rows. Well, here's a treat - Rockstar Games are now giving away the game for FREE - no charge, zilch, nada cash! Even more, they include the followup, appropriately named "Grand Theft Auto 2"! So go download it here, and enjoy a moment of classic game history!

Minigame fun: Hulk Smash Up!

Here'a a little pastime fun for you while you eagerly await my next review:-) "Hulk Smash Up" is a twist on the classic game 'Rampage', which you young kids might not remember. Anyhoo, the premise is simple, smash the buildings before the Hulk turns into Bruce Banner, and watch out for the evil military trying to spoil your fun!

Now, I'm going to assume you all know the success that is Sid Meyer's Civilization. No? Go sit in the corner - now! It's only one of the biggest game series of all time, so get educated already. :-)

So, Freeciv is a Free and Open Source empire-building strategy game inspired by the history of human civilization. The game commences in prehistory and your mission is to lead your tribe from the stone age to the space age... Have we heard this before? Yes? Well Civilization was where the buzz started, and Freeciv is a most excellent clone of said game.

I know this is supposed to be about free games, but hey - what's more free than making them yourself, right?:-)

Adventure Game Studio (AGS) "allows you to create your own point-and-click adventure games, similar to the early 90's Sierra and Lucasarts adventures. It consists of an easy-to-use development environment, and run-time engine."

What this means is that you can basically make your own adventure game, akin to Leisure suit Larry, Monkey Island, Day of the tentacle, without having to program a single peace of code! Just supply the artwork, make up an idea for a story, and click away! Of course, if you want to go more advanced you can customize pretty much anything with the help of AGS's powerful script language! And all this is FREE?! Yes, sirree!

Vega Strike is an Open Source 3D Action-Space-Sim that lets you trade, fight, and explore in a vast universe. Think classic Elite with a huge facelift! And because it's open source, users can make additions to the game themselves, and even make complete MOD conversions!
